Kitty Rice England, b. 1991

Biography
Kitty Rice (b. 1991, England) depicts themes of hedonism, anticipation and alienation; citing references from art history woven amongst direct observations from her own life and film stills. Her compositions form like improvised plays as figures enter the stage of the canvas and a narrative begins to form. Drawing plays a vital role in her process , focusing into a state of concentration whilst gathering the compositional elements and mark-making for the subsequent oil paintings. In the work she is exploring the connection between adjacent bodies with a consideration of tension change, as per Jacques Lecoq’s seven levels of tension theory. For her, Painting provides a physical realm where ghosts, actors, ex-lovers, dreamt figures and friends can all exist simultaneously. In this way, painting is a space of triumphant grief for the artist.

Rice is based in south London. She has exhibited in a number of significant group shows in both the U.K. and Mexico. In 2024, Kitty had a duo exhibition at JO-HS gallery in Mexico City. Her work has appeared at Christie’s, London in the “Best of the Drawing Year” (2022), and in London she also participated in In Dream in Colour at Greatorex St. Studios, Supernature at the Garden Museum, and Lockdown London at Vaults Projects (all 2021), as well as in the online Auction Collective (2021) and Show of Support (2020). She has also exhibited in Mexico City, including Women on the Edge of Time at No Es Una Galería and Carpa in Santa María la Ribera (both 2019), as well as in Baaq Event (2018) and Tiembla La Tierra Comienza el Canto (2018) at Colectivo Ayuntamiento 80.
